Nationality: Italian
Movement: Baroque

Biography: Born in Cortona, Pietro studied in Florence and Rome, learning his methods mostly by teaching himself. He was inspired by the frescoes of Domenichino and Annibale Carracci and the illusionism of Giovanni Lanfranco and Guernico. Pietro painted the ceiling of Rome’s Barberini palace in 1639, creating a popular reference for the decorations in other European aristocratic homes. Although he considered architecture a secondary hobby, Pietro was second only to Gian Lorenzo Bernini among Roman architects of their time.
